What Would You Witness?

I saw a question posed today..."If you could go back to one event in history what would it be"?  One at a time five choices came to my mind.  I'm sure there will be others that drift in there, but the five main ones were:

Jesus' Birth - How could you not want to be there.  To see God incarnate come into the world as a newborn baby.  To hear him cry and see him sleep.  Perhaps to be allowed to hold Him.  Most of all to be there to worship Him right from the start.

The Sermon on the Mount - To be able to hear Him give what has been called the "Constitution of the Kingdom" (no unintended reference to the rules of this country or any other please)  To learn straight from him and to see those that listened and learned at his feet too.  What a day it must have been.  What was the weather like, what did the ground feel like...would you have even noticed those things?

Walk on Water - I'm not sure how this would be accomplished since it was in the middle of the water, but it would be something to witness.  Having spent so many of the summers of my life on the water, I know how "impossible" it is to walk on, or even float most things on the water.  To see Him come up to the boat and almost pass them by...to see Peter get out of the boat and start to walk..the look of amazement on his face as he realized he was actually doing it before he started to sink.  How could you not want to witness this?

The Crucifixion - This is the hardest one to "want" to see.  It's more of a should see.  The movie "The Passion" was a revelation to me as it was for many believers.  It would be hard to imagine how much being there for the real thing would change one's view of the death of the Lord.

The Resurrection - Of course you would want to be there on Resurrection morning, to see the stone rolled away, to see Mary's conversation with the Lord, to go in and see where His body had been and His shroud layed aside and no longer needed forever. It's hard to imagine a more joyous event in all of history.

OK...number six.....

The Last Supper - What mix of emotions to be present for this.  This is the center and meaning of the Lord's sacrifice all in one event.....meant for us to reenact to remember Him and honor Him.  It is the one thing that He asked us to do in remembrance of Him, and to commemorate what He did for us.  Sadly it's been shoved aside by many churches and watered down to be as close to meaningless as they could make it.  But to be there, to see Him break the matzo, to see them share the wine, to hear Him speak the words "This is My Body" there are no words to describe how it would have felt.

I'm sure I'll be thinking about this question for a long time to come.....

  1. For me it would be "Pericope Adulterae" because I really like to pick up rocks and have a good arm and aim.
